today, like any other day at home in sunny florida, i ate a delicious meal. i'm not usually sure what i had, but it was good and i probably ate a lot of it. however, about an hour later, that unmistakable feeling came to me.
i was hungry again
my appetite can be considered quite fascinating to most people, since i can eat quite a lot of food, and still be able to tuck more in to my belly after a few minutes. i think this phenomenon is medically referred to as a "high metabolism", which i believe has something to do with the ability to digest food at an alarming pace. i'm sure most kids my age also have a "high metabolism", but it seems as if mine was overclocked. if the concept of "snacks" was never invented i probably wouldn't know how to survive during those time periods between meals. i am messed up
so messed up that today my mom asked me about this condition and worried if i might have diabetes. i said that it couldn't be possible, since i usually have a normal diet and tend to avoid treats with high sugar contents such as ice cream, candy, and soda. i actually have no idea how diabetes occur, but i always assumed it had to do with an excessive amount of sugar in blood, caused by eating too much candy or something. perhaps that was a bad assumption. hmm, oh wells. anyways, i jokingly suggested that it might be possible that i have tapeworms living in my stomach. or wherever tapeworms live, i have no idea. she then said it would be a good idea to go see a doctor or a veterinarian. i hope my mom was joking.
i decided that it would be a good idea to research the reason of my excessive hunger. after glancing a few websites (actually just one, called health.discovery.com, not that blasted wikipedia thing), and discovered a few possible explanations to my dilemma:
increased exercise - that is highly unlikely since the most exercise i do everyday is getting out of bed in the morning.
growth spurt - again, not possible considering my growth spurt happened around...well i don't remember but i'm still hungry now but not growing any taller
hormonal imbalances - this condition happens to women during pregnancy or something called the menstrual cycle. i'm pretty sure i am not a woman
uncontrolled diabetes - i'm sure all those blood tests at clinics and hospitals would've told me by now that i have diabetes.
depression - only emo kids have this, and it's all in their heads anyways. those crazy emo kids
bulimia nervosa - well i have never thrown up after i finished eating a meal. as for nervosa i think i am usually a pretty calm person
certain drugs or medication - drugs are bad
damage to the area of the brain called the hypothalamus - this is the most likely case compared to the rest of the list. it is also probably why i am not doing so well academically. unless the hypothalamus has nothing to do with academics. then i'm just being stupid.
the website article stated that prevention was often not possible. perhaps i am doomed to suffer a fate of getting the munchies.
